Cus Palermo was founded in 1947 on the initiative of a group of engineering and law students, with the aim of providing sports activities for students enrolled at the university, with an eye also on competitive sports. Cus Palermo is currently equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, consisting of a swimming pool, a football and athletics field, a sports hall and courts for tennis, basketball, volleyball, padel and five-a-side football. The university sports citadel is also open to the city and thus responds to the huge demand for sport from the southern part of the city. Cus Palermo is one of the most complete and competitive sports clubs in Italy. It currently boasts teams registered in the most prestigious championships in athletics, football, five-a-side football, basketball, handball and water polo. The club has always played a leading role in the dissemination of sport for university students, sportsmen and sportswomen, and fans in Palermo.

Over the past 20 years, Cus Palermo has become a symbol, an example to imitate in the practice of sports in Palermo. The competitive activity of the Cus is known worldwide. Athletes from Cus Palermo have won Olympic laurels, European titles, and set records. The following athletes have participated in the Olympics: Salvatore Antibo (Los Angeles 1984, Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992; Giovanni D’Aleo, Antonio and Piero Selvaggio (Los Angeles 1984); Rachid Berradi (Athens 2004) Manuela Gentili (London 2012); Ussem and Ala Zoghlami (Tokyo 2021). For some years now, Cus Palermo has been active in European projects in the Erasmus+ Programme for sport, co-financed by the European Commission. To date, the Cus has 13 Erasmus+ projects to its credit, four as applicant and nine as partner.
